Our Top Ten Videoscribe Animations

Posted by Steve Day

Over the past six years, we have seen a lot of whiteboard animations. Below is our list of the top ten videoscribe / Whiteboard animations of all time--AND THEY ARE NOT OURS. We could pat ourselves on the back but that wouldn't be fair. So below are ten videos that we think are some of the best.

10. Brokers Versus Fiduciaries
In our early days this was one of the videos that started to generate buzz in the business community. It was the first moment the businesses woke up to realize animated videos could make a real difference to their bottom line. The videos metaphor is a lot of fun and it excellently juxtaposed two very different business styles.

9. Building The Bag by Purina

This Whiteboard Animation is for the 2015 Purina National campaign. Hornet inc spent a sizable budget on just the right things--elegant character animation for the two lead stars and attention toward every detail that appears on screen. The ad's effectiveness lies in it's cute characters and overall style, so that every second says "all natural."

8. Midsize Sedan Technology by the 2016 Toyota Camry
Toyota has also caught on to the Whiteboard Animation craze. They're now using the style as the primary representative for their new line of cars. These videos are clear, entertaining, and to the point, kind of like a whiteboard animation! ;-D

7. How the General Election Works by UK Parliament
A simple overview, for 2014, into how the British General Election works voiced by none other than Rick Edwards. Of course, this video was paid for by the Houses of Parliament www.parliament.uk What is the difference between Parliament and government? How do those elected get there? And what do they do all day?

6. Raising Her Voice by Oxfam
Have you ever felt like no one's paying attention? Like they don't even read the text in your blogs! It's not fair when no one pays attention to you. Well Oxfam doesn't think it's fair either. That's why they created Raising Her Voice, their global program to raise awareness about women's voices in politics around the world. The tide is changing, though, as more woman are becoming leaders. This is making a difference for the billions of people that live on this earth, so women can now have a voice.

5. Weird Al Yankovich - Missions Statement
We were pleased when we saw this 2014 Weird Al Yankovich music video because the video expresses what we all too often encounter with companies--meaningless words that keep the status quo. The video is quite monotonous, but that's the point ! Enjoy Weird Al's jab at stagnant corporate culture.

4. Content 2020 by Coca Cola

Posted in August of 2011 this animation is one of the earliest forms of whiteboard animation. Online video advertising is very different than it was in 2011. Television commercials used to be the driving force of marketing campaigns. But the tide has turned. What is the evidence? The fact that you are reading this blog right now! As one of the leading global brands, Coca-Cola has always led the charge when it comes to marketing innovation. Jonathan Mildenhall, the Vice-President of Global Advertising Strategy, narrates this animation. Sharing in this video how Coke planned to utilize the new internet forms to change the conversation from "being spoken to" to "speaking with" your consumers. He tells us that "every contact point with a customer should tell an emotional story".

3. The Marker Maker by Jonny Lawrence
May 2010, this video was one of the earliest whiteboard animations to really catch fire on YouTube. The artistic side of us loves this animation because it is so creative. Several companies have asked us to make something like it. But often when they find out how much time and energy goes into making an animation like this and that the creation process is not conducive to change, they decide to move in another direction. Here is one of the earliest, extremely creative, whiteboard animation videos.

2. Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us by RSA Animate
The RSA stands for The Royal Society of the Arts. It is a fellowship/trust that seeks to enrich society through ideas an action. Having almost the same mission, the RSA and the Ted Talks teamed up to create a series of animations that brought whiteboard animation into the public consciousness. In 2011 their talks by famous speakers were free and available online. They had a combined viewership of 500 million. That massive following helped to catapult our genre into the light. This speech by Dan Pink was one of the break-through videos. A few more early RSA Animate versions (before 2010)can be found here and here. If anyone is to be credited with founding the whiteboard animation style, it would be Andrew Park. He, the RSA, and the Ted Talks have illustrated many lectures since 2010.

1. Hitchhiker's Choice by Kristofer Ström
This might be the video that started it all. Posted in November 2006, a year after YouTube came into existence. Just like the Marker Maker, this video is classic trippy college-student fun.
